Platinum selling artist and producer Akon has done just that with his new philanthropic venture, "Akon Lighting Africa." "Akon Lighting Africa" is a program the artist has designed to provide an academy centered around solar power. This academy, located in Mali, will educate and encourage the production and growth of solar power. The education will provide knowledge of the expansion and maintenance of solar power from engineering to entrepreneurship. Over 600 million people over the continent are projected to benefit from this initiative. "We have the Sun and innovative technologies to bring electricity to homes and communities. We now need to consolidate African expertise," he told Reuters. Akon has always been an advocate for giving back and helping others. Now he has built a bridge from the people to the sun, which is the gift that keeps on giving.
